Types of Faculty Fellowships

Fellowships for which CLAS faculty apply will generally fall into one of the following categories:

Research Fellowships

Funded by government agencies and private foundations, these awards typically support an individual researcher pursuing a self-directed project with a loosely defined end product. Recipients usually produce a general report on the work supported by the award at its conclusion. Examples: National Endowment for the Humanities Fellowships, American Council of Learned Societies Fellowships

Domestic Residential Fellowships

Funded by private foundations, these are fellowships that require recipients to join a community of scholars in a specific location. While in residence, fellows enjoy an intellectual community, share research in colloquia, and in some cases, teach an advanced seminar. Examples: MacDowell, School for Advanced Research (Santa Fe), Institute for Advanced Studies (Princeton). Please note that “Visiting Professorships” are not fellowships, even when they recognize achievement in the field.

International Residential Fellowships

Funded by non-US governments and foundations, these are residential fellowships abroad, sometimes connected to specific libraries or archives, other times organized thematically. Fellows enjoy an intellectual community and share research in colloquia. Examples: Bellagio Center Residency, Center for Chinese Studies Research Grant for Foreign Scholars, Taiwan, fellowships at the Network of European Institutes for Advanced Studies.

Short-Term Travel Awards

Certain awards with “fellowship” in the title fall into the category of short-term travel awards that do not require any advance UF approval. Short-term travel awards are small-dollar awards (less than $10,000) made directly to the researcher to support travel, lodging, and/or incidentals in support of research at a specific repository, archive, or other institution, or participation in a specific research-related event. Examples: Newberry Library Short-term Fellowships, Beckman Center Fellowships at the Science History Society. See the CLAS Faculty Guidance on Short-Term Travel Awards for more details on the characteristics of short-term awards and how faculty should apply for and report on them.

Fulbright U.S. Scholar Program

Funded by the US Department of State, the Fulbright U.S. Scholar Program supports researchers for several months to a year as they visit a non-US institution for self-directed research and/or teaching and public scholarly activities. Details of eligibility, application, and award management vary by host country and institution. Awards typically include some funding for relocation and housing plus a living stipend. Recipients may produce an interim and/or a final report to the funder.

Three Fulbright U.S. Scholar Program awards – the Fulbright Scholar, Fulbright Distinguished Scholar, and Fulbright Public Policy Fellowship – are eligible for unique and advantageous treatment at UF, both at the application and award stages. (Caveat: this treatment is available only if the award duration is a full semester or more.) After notifying their chair or director that they are applying, applicants should access the “Application Form” button on the UF International Center’s Fulbright Faculty Support Program page. UFIC will forward the application to the Dean’s office for approval; it is not necessary to complete an online CLAS Faculty Fellowship Approval request. Fulbright awards are received on top of salary through the Fulbright Faculty Support Program.

Fulbright Flex Awards

The State Department also sponsors the Fulbright Flex Awards, which allow recipients to spread their research over several short international stays during a 1-2 year period. The application process for Fulbright Flex awards is the same as for any other research fellowship (as defined above): an online CLAS Faculty Fellowship Approval request must be fully approved, and awards are generally managed by the university and replace salary.

Disambiguation: The Fulbright-Hays Fellowship is a research fellowship sponsored by the US Department of Education. Applicants must complete an online CLAS Faculty Fellowship Approval request and decide whether the award will be self-managed or managed by the university. Fulbright-Hays awards are not eligible for the UF Fulbright Faculty Support Program.
