Message from the Dean
Welcome to the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (CLAS), the intellectual heart of the University of Florida. The departments, programs, and centers that comprise CLAS offer a rich array of courses and degrees in the core disciplines of the Liberal Arts and Sciences as well as in emerging interdisciplinary fields.
A liberal education empowers students with a broad knowledge of essential fields of inquiry and with flexible skills and habits of mind. This broad education and ability to attack new problems creatively is essential in a rapidly evolving world where careers change often.
Beyond its obvious practical benefits, a liberal arts education enriches us as individuals and as a society by cultivating the life of the mind. It focuses on developing the individual’s intellectual capacity, so that students can pursue whatever avenues their curiosity and passion lead them to. Students in the Liberal Arts and Science are encouraged to explore new fields, to try new languages, to pursue creative endeavors, and to experiment intellectually.
The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences is also focused on extending the frontiers of knowledge through research. Faculty in CLAS conduct cutting edge inquiry that extends our understanding in the natural, social, and behavioral sciences and in the humanities, as well as applied research that provides our society with practical knowledge on the problems that confront it. Master’s and doctoral programs are helping to train the next generation of researchers for the academy, industry, and public service.
