Third Year Review

The criteria for promotion or for granting of tenure or permanent status shall be related to the performance of the work, which the faculty member has been assigned to do, and the faculty member’s duties and responsibilities as a member of the university community. These criteria recognize three broad categories of academic service:

  • instruction – including regular classroom teaching, direction of theses and dissertations, academic advisement, extension programs, and all preparation for this work including study to keep abreast of one’s field
  • research or other creative activity including scholarly, peer-reviewed publications
  • professional and public service

Every year, the University of Florida prepares guidelines for the tenure and promotion process.

The college has a third-year review process with the purpose of providing structured and constructive information to assist candidates to meet college and university requirements for tenure and promotion. Each department or unit will construct a third year review process that best fits their procedures and practices and adopt them as part of their policies.

Sustained Performance Evaluation

Tenured faculty members shall receive a sustained performance evaluation (PDF) (opens in new tab) once every seven years following the award of tenure or their most recent promotion. The purpose of this evaluation is to document sustained performance during the previous six years of assigned duties and to encourage continued professional growth. A performance improvement plan shall be developed for those employees whose performance is consistently below satisfactory in one or more areas of assigned duties.
